We apologize for the lateness of this post. Things have been very busy for your mod team and we know many others within the last few weeks. So today we are putting up the plotting post for our November event and the event itself will be posted late Friday or early Saturday to give everyone time to plot if they would like.

Harpy Hills Encounters - A PBP Adventure for September

vegalthon: (Default)
[personal profile] vegalthon
[community profile] parz
PLAYER EVENT: HARPY HILLS ENCOUNTERS

Hi everyone! I'm offering to trial-run some D&D style encounters for those who want to travel into the Harpy Hills over September. Play-by-Post Game Master...ing (PBP GMing) is new to me, but I've been GMing for about three years now and playing D&D for many more. Below, we'll hash out how this will work, and in the comments you can organize a party (or plan to travel solo!) and contribute to the threats and rewards everyone can encounter.

Intro:

If you've ever played a tabletop RP game (or one that uses dice rolls to sway the direction of the game) this will be a very simplified version of that. We'll be using a tier system in several catchall areas: Fighting (magical, physical, etc.), Exploring, Social and Survival, the first three of which are core pillars to D&D play, and the last being a catch-all for what kind of loot your character can scavenge and how well you resist dangerous effects. RNG will be used instead of a dice roll to determine the outcome of a specific challenge in one of those areas, and your character's skills in each area will give a bonus (+/-) to the number. Each challenge will have a threshold that signals a failure or a success, and you can RP from there until the next skill check comes along. Sometimes there will be fights! Often, there will be danger.

Determining skills:

You choose what your characters are proficient in for each category, based on their canon and and DWRP game development:

Poor: -1 bonus
Adequate: 0 bonus
Proficient: +2 bonus
Skilled: +3 bonus
Mastered: +4 bonus

I'll use Oran as an example; he's a friendly adventurer who's survived some rough experiences:
Survival: +3
Fighting: +1
Exploring: 0
Social: +2

If he runs into a regular gnoll leaping from the bushes to attack, then I as a player would write what the character does, and the DM would roll RNG (out of 20) and add/subtract the bonus to see if the action was a success. Say the gnoll was actually a rat. The number Oran would have to beat is very low, maybe 3+ or better—plus the bonus from his fighting skill—to succeed on stomping it. A gnoll might require a 12 or better. A dragon is likely going to require somewhere around 20 to even scratch. These numbers then determine either a success/fail scenario (in the case of short encounters that have lower risk and lower reward) or, in combat, a longer encounter wherein you and your party have to take a creature's hit points to 0 without your own being depleted first.

Determining Hitpoints:

Every character of medium size starts with 10 hitpoints (HP).
If your highest skill is in Survival, add 6 (1d12) per level of mastery.
If your highest skill is in Fighting, add 5 (1d10) per level of mastery.
If your highest skill is in Exploring, add 4 (1d8) per level of mastery.
If your highest skill is in Social, add 3 (1d6) per level of mastery.
If you choose to roll dice, re-roll any 1's, because 1's aren't fun for HP!

For different size classes (Small being about dwarf size or smaller, Large being about horse sized or larger, Huge being roughly 15-20 feet tall or wide, and Gargantuan being 20+ feet) add a modifier. Small creatures get half their normal hit dice. Large get double, Huge get x4, and Gargantuan get x8. This means mechas are going to be very hard to hurt, but there will probably be other repercussions to stomping through a densely packed forest, unless you're thinking creatively.
These hitpoints are your precious lifeblood. Losing them knocks a character unconscious, and a monster dead. You can determine the extent to which you want to play out the drama of a near death experience, but I won't be TPKing anyone!

Risks and Rewards:

Low risk encounters involve pass/fail mechanics, like fording a river or jumping over a pit. Usually, there aren't any great rewards but to carry forward.
High risk encounters often lead to fights, negotiations, or possibly even puzzle solving. The rewards are better here! Because this is a player-led plot, your characters won't be making any massive in-game discoveries, but based on what they fight and what plants they're hunting, it's possible to harvest monsters for trophies, alchemical components like for salves and healing potions, and practical uses like armor or makeshift weapons.

(There are robots in town who are able to forge items and process monster meat, according to earlier mod posts! Feel free to do what you wish with trophies!)

Erku and failed encounters:

The forest is still rife with dangers that are sex-island themed: aphro and entanglement traps are endemic to the plant life, and there may be other bingo card-themed hazards for characters to reap or avoid. For the sake of giving me time to keep all threads moving, I'm unfortunately going to have to handwave any NPC-based smut. So, if your character is overcome by aphro or tentacle monsters, they're considered unable to carry onward. Similarly, if their HP is reduced to 0 and there isn't anyone around to help them, consider them overcome. They'll be able to drag themselves into town in a sorrier state than they started, but the only lasting damage is whatever you'd enjoy playing out with your CR.
If a group is traveling into the forest and someone trips an aphro trap, I think it will be easier if we handwave the results in the exploration thread. You can absolutely play out the results in another thread (maybe in [community profile] lusi?), but FTB will help me GM any further exploration without running into lag issues.

Extra thought & warnings:

Please feel free to ask a question below! Use the top-level comments to organize yourselves into groups, help me flesh out valuable plants and monsters to throw at you, and figure out if there are any obvious OOC or IC pitfalls that could stop making play fun.
This isn't a required plot, and there are no consequences for NOT joining. As with all PBP and multi-player threads, things may move slowly, so please be kind with one another.
Depending on interest, I may need to cap the number of threads I can GM! To start, I can commit to 2 active parties and 4 single threads. If a character or party is overcome, or if they find what they're looking for, I can then open a new slot. I'm planning on launching the in-game thread on Friday afternoon PST, and will be available to offer new threads thru the end of the month. (As a consequence, some of Oran's CR may be a little slow this month!)

PLOTTING 004: FOWL-WEATHER FRIENDS

I. Honk If You're...

Celebrate, for the Augur is back online and almost certainly fully operational! Have you heard the glorious early-morning honks of the latest avian arrivals to the Island? If not, you will, because the new island geese appear to be propagating rapidly, growing bold enough in their increasing numbers to invade the city proper. The geese are clever and aggressive when provoked, and moreover? They seem to take a special pleasure in tormenting any being who treats them unkindly, snapping at rear ends and stealing away food and belongings while their targets’ backs are turned. Stolen items may be delivered to unsuspecting bystanders, or worse - thrown into the pond. On the other hand, Islanders whom the geese perceive as pleasant and kind to their brethren might find themselves gifted with mystery treasures (which all look suspiciously used).

The good news? The geese are tamable and smart enough to be taught fun tricks! Failing that, they are also very delicious when roasted.

II. [ cat ears intensify ]

Those who still have their ears and tails will find themselves beset with new urges. Bestial impulses grow by the day and become impossible to ignore. Some may find themselves overpowered by the urge to find a mate: someone to bite and claim, or someone to be claimed by. Others may give in to the instincts of a predator, becoming territorial or violent. There are even some who may feel domestic, preferring to groom themselves and others, and to strut their pedigreed selves.

Emotions are strong and powerful in those who still have their feline influence, but all of that influence will fade away after the first orgasm of the full moon, no Auspiciousness necessary.

III. Voting Gauntlet: Cats VS Birds

Between happy kittens and angry geese, one couldn’t be blamed for failing to notice when the mysterious fog that lingers over much of the unexplored interior of the island recedes a little further to reveal lushly forested mountains that seem to call out to be climbed. The friendly robots share that they have recently recovered data regarding the many medicinal herbs and fruits available for harvest on those peaks, but warn to stay away from the pockets of fog that linger in the valleys lest curious residents risk losing their memories again. If prompted further, especially considerate ‘bots may also think to warn of the monsters that tend to glitch in from their guests’ homeworlds. (The more optimistic robots, however, are holding out hope that this bug has been repaired. It hasn’t.)

What the robots don’t yet know is that the introduction of bird species back unto Erku has also sparked the return of native fauna: namely, the harpies.

The harpies conceal their nests deep within the mountains, and guard them fiercely. Human-sized but with supernatural strength, harpies will attack ferociously with both their fierce talons and their deafening shrieks if their territory is disturbed, and their shouts may render an Islander completely immobile where they stand. The effects last for hours, long enough for the creatures to escape - but if one is lucky enough to be found or accompanied by an Islander who is immune, a kiss on the lips will break the spell!

Strangely enough, the harpies seem to be completely terrified of Islanders who still have their feline features, perhaps because the harpy scream seems to have no effect on cat people at all. In fact, even fake kitty ears will be enough to spook harpies on sight. Once the robots uncover this research and make it available to the public at the library, costume cat ears and tails (and collars?) can easily be found for sale for just a few credits at the convenience store or the hospital gift shop. Explore Harpy Hills safely!

EVENT 003: INAUSPICIOUS TIDES

I. Swap til you drop

With the abundance brought forth by the influx of Eros energy in the world, the Augur has blessed the world's new organic inhabitants - past and recent arrivals both - with personalized welcome packages. Overnight, these goody bags have been quietly delivered to the doorsteps (or dirty hovel floors, Gundams, tree branches, etc.) of each Island resident. Open them up to find a supply of basic hygiene necessities perfectly suited to your tastes, as well as a small selection of fun extras: good quality clothing, beachwear, fancy soaps, "necessities" to complete an Auspicious Act, and maybe even a surprise from home.

Unfortunately, not every item is yours. In their haste to please their guests, the robots might have mixed a few items up, switching up favorite colors, smells, lingerie sizes, and preferred condom flavors - among other things - for someone else's. What’s more, a tiny glitch in the Augur has also beamed some inventory items directly from their owners' homes and placed them right in a stranger's welcome bag!

The robots catch on quickly to the problem. By afternoon, they have hastily set up a swap meet on the beach for residents to trade, sell, or barter their unwanted items.

"̷T̶r̷a̷d̴e̵ ̷a̴u̸s̷p̸i̶c̸e̴s̶ ̵a̴n̷d̴ ̶b̵e̶ ̷t̶w̸i̴c̵e̴-̴b̸l̷e̸s̷s̸e̸d̵!̴"̶

As a special event, the robots on site are also facilitating square swaps for consenting parties, and will upload the appropriate app to the devices of interested residents. Use your wrist device to project your A5 card for all to see and get swapping! Simply by tapping each other's card displays, you can easily switch squares between yourselves. The robots have authorized one square swap per person.

II. Treasure Island

i̶n̴o̶r̷g̷a̷n̷i̵c̷ ̸m̷a̶t̵t̴e̶r̴ ̶d̵e̵t̵e̶c̷t̵e̶d̶.̶.̷.̴

All of the activity on the beach has kicked up something beneath the sands, and as you make your wait through the festivities you may notice something glittering and gold on the sands. Mysterious treasure has begun to wash up from the seas - from large chests (ahem) to small statues, from ornate jewelry to faceless coins of indeterminate origin. You may not be the materialistic sort, but the treasure almost compels you to pick it up. Once you find something, you'll be hungry to unearth more.

When questioned about the treasure's source, the robots appear stumped. Jewels and gold have no worth to them, they explain.

h̶o̸l̷d̶ ̴o̵n̵ ̷t̶o̶ ̴w̶h̶a̶t̸'̸s̷ ̵p̸r̶e̶c̸i̶o̶u̴s̶.̴.̶.̴

Time will reveal that this is cursed treasure. The treasures on the beach inspire feelings of not only jealousy, but also the desire to flaunt what you do have. You find yourself craving what belongs to others - be it food, items... or even lovers. Those under the treasure’s spell are attracted to even more treasure; a flash of shiny new gemstones may be all it takes to entice even the most loyal to your side.

Anyone who can sense magic will notice a faint green aura around a cursed item, but little else can be determined. Incorporating an item into your Auspicious Acts - be it coin to trade for the pleasure of their company, or if you'd prefer to be taken wearing nothing but decadent pearls - seems to lift the aura and alleviate those strange feelings of envy and vanity.

Inauspicious Tides

The lucky few who discover how to cleanse the treasure of its aura are not enough to stop the rightful owners from coming to claim what’s theirs. From the deep, they rise. A flash of lightning illuminates the dark sea. A horde of bodies begin to walk out from beneath the waves. They range from monstrous to humanoid, but a commonality they all have is decay.

"Our treasure..."

Some are completely inhuman, covered in bone and debris, flailing slimy limbs or tentacles at anything that moves. Others seem half-person, half-shipwreck, with bodies mutating around pieces of driftwood. While the largest of them threaten to wreak havoc on the beaches from the shallows, their long tentacles reaching for any buildings within their grasp with destructive intent, the smaller and more human-looking of the invaders march in droves towards land. The robots rally to defend the Island, but it soon becomes apparent that they are no match for this threat.

"Give it back..."

When the horde makes it ashore, they may attempt to fight the residents of the Island - but they seem far more agitated by the appearance of any native 'bots, attacking them maliciously. They are impervious to gunfire, they feel no pain, and their waterlogged bodies make them resistant to flame. They spill over all corners of the city as they make their way to the hospital.

Should any of these creatures make it inside, they will head for the Augur first and foremost.

And though the sun's rays will peek through the windows and turn them to ash come daybreak, their damage is done. The Augur will go offline for repairs; the robots will dedicate themselves to tending to it for the next month.

INITIATING F.O.G. PROTOCOL

I. It lives in the mist

(Jul 5 - Jul 8)

i̵n̴i̶t̶i̴a̷t̸i̷n̶g̵ ̴F̴.̴O̴.̵G̴.̵ ̶p̵r̶o̷t̵o̴c̵o̶l̶.̶.̵.̸
f̷a̵c̶i̶a̵l̸ ̸r̶e̶c̶o̵g̶n̴i̶t̶i̷o̸n̷ ̴d̴i̶s̸a̸b̴l̴e̵d̴.̸.̶.̶

The weather in the Nameless City has always been dreary, but today you wake up to a peculiar chill in the air. A thick and impenetrable fog, which once lingered on the coast and obscured the horizon, has rolled in to claim the majority of the island. Fortunately, the city area surrounding the hospital stands as an oasis at its center.

The fog hangs heavy for days, inspiring a strange sluggishness among members of the populace. For those brave enough to wander into the thick of it, they will find it quite unnavigable. Not only is it impossible to see beyond one’s own nose, but any navigation tools (technological and magical alike) fail in the most unusual ways. Inevitably, explorers find themselves circling back to where they began.

What’s worse, anyone who comes in contact with the fog - whether they breathe it in or not - will find themselves forgetting... well, anything. Names. Faces. Where they came from or what they were doing. Even dear friends might seem as anonymous strangers to them.

Some people appear to be more affected by lethargy and forgetfulness than others. Regardless, it probably won’t take long to discover that an Auspicious Act clears those symptoms right up, even with someone you feel you've never met before. After all, doesn't something hot to drink and another warm body to curl up with sound comfortable?

. . .D̶o̵ ̷n̴o̸t̷ ̶f̸o̸r̴g̷e̴t̷ ̵y̵o̴u̷r̸ ̴p̷u̵r̶p̸o̵s̷e̵.̸

II. Home of the latest by Chuck T*ngle

(Jul 8 onwards)

In a few days’ time, the fog has retreated to the edges of the city, marking a clear boundary between the Nameless City and the desolate wastelands beyond. Yet, the terrain isn’t exactly how Erku’s newest inhabitants will remember it: the ‘bots have been hard at work reconstructing the city library! You won’t find any books inside, however. Instead, the (slightly dingy, perhaps still a little structurally unsound) building archives media data chips that can be freely downloaded to your bracelet device. Or, if you prefer, you might be interested in purchasing a tablet-like electronic reader to peruse your selections on a larger screen. These devices cost roughly 200 credits and their function will be explained by one of the few attending robots navigating the shelves.

" Y̴o̶u̴ ̴m̷u̴s̷t̵ n̵'ot̷ ̵b̶e̷n̷d̴ ̴t̶h̶e̵ ̵t̷i̵n̶e̷s̶.̴ "

Unfortunately, much of the data from the ancient Auspicious Age remains corrupted. The robots are working on restoring as much of the information as possible, but in the meantime, they have made available the files they believed most interesting to their organic guests… that is to say, racy novels and films. The robot attendants are apologetic about the situation when asked for alternative materials, but they suggest that perhaps the Augur is listening to your needs!

III. Don't forget to wash before you enter

(Jul 8 onwards)

Welcome, lifeform.
...Person.
All is as foretold.
Welcome.
Please initiate a c̷l̸e̶a̵n̸s̴i̵n̴g̴ ̷r̵i̸t̴u̸a̶l̷.

The retreating fog reveals something else: plumbing infrastructure is back in order within the city, and the formerly empty pools of the bathhouse have filled as if overnight. Warm, welcoming steam rising from the mineral-rich waters of the open pools. When prompted, the native robots relay ancient claims that the water has healing properties for organic lifeforms, though they can’t elaborate on any details. They don’t seem to have much to say about gender segregation, either.

Nevertheless, the temperature is just perfect for the chilly weather, and those who strip down and dip their toes in may find their muscles soothed and their minds cleared of the mysterious effects of the fog... not to mention any other worries or reservations they might have arrived with. As long as you’re in the water, you feel perfectly at peace. So why not relax for a while and enjoy some skinship with your fellow arrivals?

Please feel free to plot in the comments here. Post questions and toplevels to the event log.
